Page history last edited by Alex badin 14 years, 10 months ago

Salvador Isabelino Allende Gossens was born on the 26th of July in 1908 in Valparaiso (Chile). Grown in an upper-class family Salvador attended high school at the Liceo Eduardo de la Barra in Valparaíso. In his early life, his political influence came from the shoe-maker Juan De Marchi, who was an Italian anarchist. He took his medical degree in 1932 when he was a Marxist activist. In 1933 Allende participated in funding of Chile’s Socialist Party. He served as minister of health after the election to the Chamber of Deputies in 1937 until 1942. Allende worked in the Liberal leftist coalition of President Pedro Aguirre Cerda. In 1945 he won his fist election to the Senate. Allende also ran for Presidency in 1952, unfortunately he was expelled from the Socialist Party because he was supported by the outlawed Communists. Most of the ideas of Allende were countunued by Fidel Castro, who was an extremist of Cuba.

In 1952, 1958 and 1964 Allende was an unsuccessful candidate for president. He became the first Marxist to gain power in a free democratic election when he was elected as president in 1970. Serious economic problems were faced by the new government such as inflation was running at 30%, 20% of the adult male did not have a job, and half of the children under the age of 15 suffered from malnutrition. Allende decided to take action and to redistribute wealth and land in Chile. Salary increased to around 40% and at the same time companies were not allowed to increase prices. Banks and copper industry were nationalized and diplomatic relations with Cuba, China and the German Democratic Republic were re-established. CIA and other groups were against Allende and therefore CIA arranged Michael V. Townley to be sent to Chile under the alias of Kenneth W. Enyart. He was guided by Aldo Vera Serafin of the SAO (secret army organization). David Atlee Phillips who was asked to lead the special task force to remove Allende had Townley under his control. The CIA tried to persuade Chile’s chief of Staff General Rene Schneider to overthrow Allende but he refused. On October 22nd, 1970 Schneider’s car was ambushed and he drew a gun to defend himself and was shot point-blank numerous times. He was then rushed to the hospital and died three days later. The Military courts in Chile found out that Schneider’s death was caused by two military groups, Roberto Viaux and Camilo Valenzuela. It was claimed that CIA was providing support for both groups.

Early Years

Salvador Allende was born on the 26th of June 1908 in Valparaiso, Chile. Salvador was the son of Salvador Allende Castro and his family was part of the Chilean upper class. Allende graduated from the University of Chile with a degree in medicine in 1926 and although his family had a history of always supporting liberal political parties, Salvador's main political influence came from an anarchist, Juan de Marchi. In 1933 he co-founded the Socialist Party of Chile and became their chairman. In the same year he married Hortensia Bussi with whom he later had 3 children. After Allende entered the government in 1938 and had won the parliamentary seat for Valparaiso, him and the rest of the Parliament sent Adolf Hitler (leader of Nazi Germany) a telegram telling him that they were strictly against what he was implemeting in Germany by persecuting the Jews.

Conclusion:

Salvador allende was a well-educated, clever and persistent man, who, after having lost three presidential elections took advantage of the economical crisis that Chile was facing to win the fourth one. He was the first Marxist ever to win presidential elections. He applyed  Karl Marx's theory of socialism by redistributing wealth and land, increasing salaries, forbiding companies to raise their prices and nationalizing banks and copper industries. Salvador Allende was an opposer of the Nazi regime, in 1938 he wrote a letter to Adolf hitler to tell him that he dissaproved of the killing and persecuting of Jews. The C. I. A. was against salvador allende, they sent men in charge of getting read of him, However, though they managed to assasinate Rene Shneider, chile's chief of staff who refused to overthrow him, Allende stayed in office untill september the 11th 1973 when he died in the presidential palace fighting off the rebels who had planned a coup against him, led by Augusto Pinochet who became the next president of Chile.

Structure of the text seems organised, although some mistakes in the time line. There are also too many pictures, which con fuse the reader a little from a structure point of view.
The overall structure of the wiki is accetable. The exercise was very usefull, to get a brief rewew on the events and historical individuals we've been studing during the year. Also it gave sometimes a good time line which help keeping the evets in order.
