INTROCUCTION

The Cuban revolution started in 1959 when the rebels tried to take over the Moncada Barracks, but failed. Fulgencio Batista powerfully brought Cuba to victory. Because of the giant failure, nearly all the rebels were either killed or captured by the Cubans. Then at Fidel Castro’s trial, that is when he gave his famous speech “History Will Absolve All”, and he was then pardoned after only two years. When he was finally released, he was then forced into safety in Mexico. In Mexico he then trained an army to prepare for the guerilla war that would fight Batista.

THE BEGINNING OF FIDEL CASTRO

At first, the United States supported Fidel Castro, but once he started to support communism. Then, all the support was diminished, and The United States tried to over throw him. Then the United States formed an army known as La Brigada that invaded Cuba’s Bay of Pigs on April 17^th, 1961. But they were destroyed by Castro right after President Kennedy refused to involve the US armed forces. And then, 1200 invaders were captured. But then The U.S was forced into giving Cuba 53 Million dollars for food and supplies for the release of the captives. But then, because of Kennedy’s lack of involvement in the war, Khrushchev thought that America wouldn’t do much to stop the expansion of communism. So in July 1962 Khrushchev installed missiles in Cuba. When Kennedy found out, he completely blockaded Cuba and threatened to invade. Then the U.S.S.R promised to leave Cuba if America did not invade. It was then when The Cuban Missile Crisis was resolved. Then after the crisis was resolved, the soviet aide had 75% of Cuba’s economy. The United States had printed a trade embargo just around the time of the Pay of the Pigs invasion, so then, when the Soviet Union Collapsed in 1991, so did Cuba’s economy. Then, very strict rations were imposed on food and supplies. And Castro’s leadership was still on the verge of collapse.

Attack on Moncada Barracks

Displeased over Batista, Fidel Castro decided to drop out of law and start an underground revolution organization with his brothers. Supporters of the group grew to about 135 people. They gathered guns and other weapons,  their first plan being, to attack the Moncada barracks, Batista’s biggest garrison, just outside Santiago de Cuba, in the south-west part of the island. The attack failed miserably, and 60 people of the organization died, and the rest ran and hid in the Sierra Maesta Mountain. They were eventually captured and killed apart from Fidel Castro and his brother Raul caused a disagreement.

Cuban Revolution: A Start to an End

     The objective of the revolution was to maintain a cummunist power in Cuba. Many powers at this time strongly opposed Communism, which is why in the end, things became extremely serious. With Castro’s regime in place, Cuba became very important to the global power of the Soviet Union. They also became an important player in the severity of the Cold war. Castro and his Regime presented the U.S.S.R and any allying United states powers, an all time high threat to a nuclear disaster. Most of us may not be here today if things had not been settled the way they were between the United States and Cuba. With the coming to power of Khrushchev, and the Cuban Missile Crisis threat, the world today could have been completely changed. Yet another reason to be grateful for Kennedy's responsible and peaceful way of making his decisions. Today, Cuba presents no further danger to most nations, but its previous dictatorships remain unsupported and opposed due to violations of human rights. It is quite ironic that in the beginning of his rule, the United States fully supported Fidel Castro overruling of General Fulgencio Batista, and in the end they fully opposed his dictatorship.

Fulgencio Batista

Fulgencio Batista was an important force; he was the cause of the Cuban Revolution. As a general guess, without Fulgencio Batista, Fidel Castro may never have come to power. Fulgencio Batista was a terrible leader. He came from a humble family and he was also a mulatto. Batista was cruel to the people, and was involved with the mafia. The revolt or Cuban Revolution was because of Fulgencio Batista, the people of Cuba wanted Batista out of power and Fidel Castro was there to help them, and aid the civilians and other population with their problems. Castro led the attacks on the Moncada barracks which failed extremely but showed the people that it was not impossible to revolt; this caused people to join the force against Batista. Castro seemed to be the voice of the people of Cuba; he was smart, a leader and a communist. At this point, the US would aid Fidel Castro against Batista.
